Invitation to Ski Patrollers
CODY’S CHALLENGE
A Randonee Endurance Ski Race
Greetings from the mountains of Steamboat, Colorado!
The Cody St. John Foundation along with the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation, the Steamboat Ski Patrol and the United States Forest Service will host the second annual Cody’s Challenge “Randonee” endurance race, on Saturday, April 3, 2010 across the Steamboat Ski Area. The Cody St. John Foundation is writing this letter to encourage your participation in our unique event. Cody’s Challenge is Steamboat’s and our venture into this exciting and demanding sport, allowing participants the unique opportunity to climb, traverse and descend a variety of trails across the mountain.
The event will start at the top of the Gondola at 8:30 AM with a 7:45-8:00 AM upload on the Gondola for participants. This year the race will feature two courses: the extreme course is designed for the avid winter sportsman and the enthusiast course will challenge other participants. All athletes will finish at the Bashor Picnic Area for a well-deserved lunch.
Race entry for Cody’s Challenge is $40 for the event only and $80 for the event and an all-day lift ticket. The festivities continue that evening with a public celebration at 5:30 PM in the Bear River Bar & Grill. A $20.00 ticket is your entry to enjoy all-you-can-eat chili feast, a ticket for prize drawings and music by The Tuff Grooves. (Race participants get in free with their wristbands.)
The Cody St. John Foundation, a 501 (C)(3) non-profit charity organization, was established to honor the legacy of a young man that touched many lives and continues to do so in the wake of his passing, Cody St. John. In 2006 Cody, a passionate Steamboat Ski Patroller was awarded the title of ‘Colorado Ski Country USA Patroller of the Year’. He was the first on only full-time snowboarder to ever receive this prestigious title. Cody was in a car accident and died on April 8, 2007. At the time of his accident, Cody was on his way to attend an orientation at the University of Wyoming for the nursing program, the impetus for the foundation’s purpose.
By helping The Cody St. John Foundation grow this event, you are making it possible to accomplish two goals:
1). Facilitate continuing medical education and training for professional ski patrollers or groups of patrollers nationwide. The Foundation awards medical training scholarships to qualified individuals or groups.
2). Increasing public awareness of the importance for organ donation.
Both these goals symbolize Cody’s credo as he rescued people on the mountain, but also made the choice to be an organ donor. With your gracious support for Cody’s Challenge, all profits from this event go to raising and providing these scholarships and indirectly promoting organ donations. After just a little over two years of fund raising, scholarship applications will open up in April 2010.
